Research for every body and every biology
An inclusive, direct-to-patient mobile experience for clinical trial participants.
In the U.S., a new drug or therapy currently undergoes, on average, 12 years of testing before entering the market. Clinical trials are essential to this process, but barriers including location, socio-economic status, and research awareness often result in certain demographics being underrepresented. Neon partnered with Medable – a physician-founded company making trials more accessible – to create a patient-centric, mobile prototype to manage and ship clinical trial materials directly to patients' homes.
Getting clinical trial materials, such as medications, heart monitors, or glucose monitors, into patients' hands can be challenging. Initial user research and UX reviews showed that Medable's current direct-to-patient (DTP) delivery experience was ripe for a redesign. Together, we needed to craft an intuitive digital experience that would build trust and support participants through each phase of a clinical trial, beginning with the collection of all necessary trial materials.
Clinical trial participants were our team's core focus, but we also considered other users' needs. For example, we designed dashboards that give trial monitors a snapshot view of material deliveries, at every stage. We also considered how the experience integrated with shipping and logistics, and accounted for shipments with temperature sensitivities or that were damaged during delivery. Our wireframe exploration reflected the wide array of platform users and developed custom screens to meet the needs of each group.
We tested the first round of wireframe explorations with multiple user types, including trial monitors and participants, and incorporated the feedback into a clickable prototype. Having a full, end-to-end view stratified for different users realigned Medable's various teams around the goal of creating a best-in-class experience for trial participants. Now, the company has a comprehensive plan for its DTP digital experience and can begin scoping the MVP product.
"Thank you for being great partners in thinking through the best experience for users, and for hitting the mark with thoughtful and high-quality designs."
