Mental wellbeing for a changing workforce

Neon first partnered with founder Sean Burke to create CheckingIn – a simple and intuitive app that boosts mental health and wellbeing in just minutes a day. As the platform gained traction with organizations, HR leaders, and PeopleOps pros, Sean chose to pivot the core business model from B2C to B2B. We overhauled the website to demonstrate how CheckingIn effectively supports both teams and individuals, while delivering a measurable return on investment for a wide range of employers.

Where science meets strategy

Research shows that organizations gain, on average, a 4.2x return on every dollar they spend on mental health supports. Yet, most people aren’t accustomed to exploring their emotions or pausing to examine how they feel. Sean suspected that the same devices we use for distraction could actually enhance mental wellbeing – and we applied this insight to create CheckingIn. In phase two, the new, B2B-focused website needed to balance team and personal benefits, and distill evidence-based science into concise, engaging copy.

Value in simplicity

Wellbeing from every angle

Our team ran with Sean's prototype to build a full mobile product that effectively boosts mental health. Animations and subtle design transitions create a clean user experience, while visualization tools make it easy to track trends and patterns. CheckingIn is a judgment-free space for people to quickly and privately process their emotions; we knew the website should have an equally calm visual style. Color gradients add depth to each page, and line-based illustrations create a welcoming vibe. The new product tagline and web copy also clarify the offering without overwhelming visitors.

CheckingIn consistently receives glowing reviews from organizations and individuals alike. In 2021, researchers at the University of British Columbia Vision Lab demonstrated that using CheckingIn significantly improved user wellbeing. Neon not only built this sophisticated product, but our team also gave Sean a clear strategy to guide the phases of his business – including the revamped website, which aligned the business mission with the new target market.
